Yarn Trends for Autumn/Winter 2008/09: Woolmark Trends have identified that this season is all about getting back to what we know… building on what we already know, emphasising the versatility of wool and other natural fibres by being innovative and experimental rather than looking for new alternatives Blends are prominent and they continue to add value and functionality to items which are key for the season and the future.
They also play an important role in creating the varied and appealing textures that underpin the season. Fibres like alpaca, paper, milled wool, linen and hemp are at the forefront creating diverse surfaces and different fabric handles.
High yarn counts are used to create stiff corrugated surfaces whilst medium counts are suitable for a more spongy consistency. Fancy tweeds, bouclé, dogstooth, brocade, knops and slubs create added interest and texture to simple knits and woven designs.
Compact weaves and decorative geometrical patterning sits alongside lightweight net-like knits and plain yarns. This season is all about contradiction and irregularities, lightweight fabrics create volume and depth and uneven jacquards stir solid colour surfaces. Sophisticated weaves and intarsia designs sit alongside the simplicity of merino, cashmere and wool blends that highlight colour and form.
