Celebrating 200 years of innovation, the Fashion from Fleece exhibition has opened at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney.

Supported by Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), the exhibition presents key moments of wool in fashion with pieces from the likes of Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons.

AWI Chairman Ian McLachlan said ever since the first bale of wool was sent to England with the intention of commercial sale in 1807, the Australian wool industry has continually gone through an innovation revolution.

“This exhibition shows key moments in fashion and the innovation of Australian Merino wool through two centuries,” said Mr McLachlan.

“The first wool samples sent to England in 1804, which provided King George III with evidence of the colony's potential, were returned to Australia and are included in the exhibition alongside samples from some of the finest fleeces produced in Australia to date.

“This collection represents the miraculous growth and innovation of the Australian wool industry, and the advancements we have made both on farm and off.

“Australian woolgrowers have worked to make the fleeces they produce finer and softer, while also improving their productivity; always striving for the minimal environmental footprint.

“Australian Merino has excellent natural credentials; it is 100 per cent natural, renewable, biodegradable, naturally flame resistant, and produced in grassland ecosystems.
