According to information from Aprisindo domestic demand for footwear will increase by eight percent this year. The Indonesian government regards the national footwear industry as one of the leading economic sectors in the noncrude/ oil products category and, hence, as a key pillar for exports.

The volume of shoes exported by the Indonesian shoe industry amounted to US$ 1.6 billion in 2006. Its most important export market is the USA. According to data furnished by the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics 2006 saws shoes worth US$ 450 million being exported to the USA.

This corresponds to a 28 percent share in the foreign exchange revenue generated by the shoe sector. Germany ranks second with exports worth US$ 132 million accounting for 8.2 percent, followed by the United Kingdom with an 8.1 percent share and total exports worth US$ 130 million. Other major export destinations include Belgium (US$ 122 million, 7.6%), the Netherlands (US$ 112 million, 7%) and Japan (US$ 96 million, 6%).

Experts expect Indonesia might be benefiting from the anti-dumping policy pursued by the European Union versus shoe imports from China and Vietnam. This means the country intends to win over at least 10 percent of market share currently held by China and Vietnam, i.e. approximately 20 million pairs with a total value of US$ 240 million.

The Indonesian Footwear Association believes the Indonesian shoe industry should look for diversification of both its export markets by adding countries in the European Union and of its product portfolio. So far, shoe exports from Indonesia have been dominated by sports shoes. However, Aprisindo views a far larger potential in the non-sports shoe segment.
