Maternity apparel maker Mothers Work Inc has announced preliminary net sales for February 2006 and reaffirmed its previous guidance for both sales and earnings for the second quarter.
Preliminary net sales for the month of February 2006 increased approx. 4.8 percent to $45.7 million from $43.6 million reported for the month of February 2005.
The increase in net sales for February 2006 was primarily driven by sales from the expansion of the company's proprietary Two Hearts(TM) Maternity collection to an additional 497 Sears(R) locations during late March 2005 and sales from the company's Oh Baby! by Motherhood(TM) licensed arrangement with Kohl's(R), which launched during the second quarter of fiscal 2005, partially offset by a decrease in comparable store sales.
Comparable store sales for February 2006 decreased 2.2 percent versus a comparable store sales increase of 0.8 percent for February 2005 (a 28-day month) when measured against the last 28 days of February 2004 (a 29-day month).
Comparable store sales for the combined months of January and February 2006 increased 0.7 percent versus the combined months of January and February 2005.
During February 2006, the company opened two stores and closed eight stores, including four related to multi- brand store openings.
On February 1st 2006, the company opened its tenth Destination Maternity(TM) superstore, our approx. 10,000-square-foot, three-level world flagship superstore on the corner of 57th Street and Madison Avenue in New York City.
