Maternity apparel retailer Mothers Work Inc announced that preliminary net sales for the month of October 2005 increased 11.7 percent to $48.2 million from $43.2 million reported for the month of October 2004.

The increase in net sales for October was primarily driven by sales from the Company's new Oh Baby! By Motherhood licensed arrangement with Kohl's, which launched during the second quarter of fiscal 2005, and sales from the expansion of the Company's proprietary Two Hearts Maternity collection to an additional 497 Sears locations during late March 2005.

Comparable store sales for October 2005 increased 1.7 percent (based on 1,028 locations, which excludes 7 locations closed during the entire month of October 2005 due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita) versus a comparable store sales increase of 1.0 percent (based on 912 locations) for the October 2004 period.

The comparable store sales increase of 1.0 percent for October 2004 was favorably impacted by approximately 3 percentage points due to having five Saturdays and five Sundays in October 2004 compared to four Saturdays and four Sundays in October 2003.

During October 2005, the Company opened 2 stores and closed 2 stores, with 1 store closing representing a store closed during the entire month of October due to Hurricane Rita. The Company ended the month with 852 stores and 1,593 total retail locations (which excludes 5 stores and 10 total retail locations closed during the entire month of October due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita), compared to 888 stores and 1,120 total retail locations at the end of October 2004.
