Spanish textile, garment bodies to negotiate separately

Until now, the Spanish Intertextile Council (CIE) was the main body that negotiated contracts with trade unions on behalf of both the textiles and clothing sectors.

But now, the CIE has decided that negotiations of future agreements would be done separately from 2014, according to a modaes.es report.

The latest CIE decision means that the Textile Industry Confederation (Texfor) and Valencia Textile Association (Ateval) would negotiate wage agreement with the unions on behalf of the textile sector, while the Spanish Federation of Garments (Fedecon) and the Spanish Association of Knitwear (AEGP) would negotiate on behalf of the garment sector employers.

The latest CIE decision was taken by mutual agreement, said Angel Asensio, president of Fedecon.

In June 2013, the textile and garment sectors in Spain employed nearly 91,000 people, who were drawing Social Security benefits, including the general category as well as the self-employed.

The textiles sector had a total of 42,164 workers, out of which 37,199 members were under General Social Security. The clothing sector had 48,753 members, with 37,735 workers registered under the General Social Security.

The present wage agreement was signed on June 5 this year after a prolonged two and a half years of negotiations. Initially, Fedecon and AEGP did not agree to the terms of the agreement, but later on signed the agreement governing the relationship between employers and workers in the textile industry till December 2013.

The negotiations for wage agreement for 2014 are scheduled to begin in September this year.
