Insights

  • Sumitomo Bakelite will acquire AGC's polycarbonate business to boost its mobility, electronics, and building materials portfolio.
  • The move aligns with its Vision 2030 and Medium-Term Plan to lead niche markets.
  • By integrating AGC's tech and TWINCARBO brand, the company aims to enhance competitiveness and target top industry share, especially in driver assistance systems.

Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. (HQ: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo President: Shinichi Kajiya) has agreed to acquire the polycarbonate business operated by AGC Inc. (HQ: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Yoshinori Hirai, hereinafter referred to as “AGC”) and its subsidiary AGC Polycarbonate Co., Ltd. By taking over the achievements and technologies that AGC has built up to date and integrating the strengths of each company, we aim to improve our services to customers, develop our business and create new value.

Reason for Acquisition

Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. group aims to become “a company providing dreams for the future through creating value with our customers” as Vision 2030. In order to achieve this goal, the Medium-Term Business Plan 2024-26, which is currently under way, calls for “Aiming for ‘niches & top market share,’ we take on the challenge of our portfolio transformation leading to value creation.” AGC Polycarbonate Co., Ltd.

This acquisition will contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of polycarbonate products used in our group’s strategic mobility areas (automobiles, aircraft and railways). In the driver assistance field, where growth is particularly expected, it is possible to create synergies by combining the unique optical sheet technologies of our company and AGC.

Our company will take over AGC’s polycarbonate products and strengthen its product capabilities in building materials and industrial and electronic applications to enhance its competitive advantage. With regard to the powerful “TWINCARBO™” brand, we will strengthen sales to data centers and aim for the industry’s top share.

Future schedule of the business to be transferred

The schedule for transferring product sales will be announced individually to each customer. We will strive to facilitate the transition and minimize the impact on related parties.
