To help the textile and clothing industry, ITKIB, (The Istanbul Textile Exporters Association) with the assistance of European Union funding has been the beneficiary of a project that addresses these key areas of competitive improvement.
The project known as the 'Fashion and Textile Cluster (FTC) project' is designed to help the Turkish Small to Medium Enterprises (SME's). The overall objective for the FTC project is to increase the international competitiveness of domestic SMEs, and enable improve the capacity of Turkish Textile and Clothing sector.
Mr Peter Wilson Project Director informed Fibre2fashion, “The project started in January 2005 and it lasted 33 months. It has just now ended in October 2007. The Fashion and Textile Cluster (FTC) project is financed by the European Union and the beneficiary is the Turkish Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the Textile and Clothing sector (T/C), represented in this instance by ITKIB.”
Talking about contributions of ITKIB to FTC project, Ms Özlem Bektas Service Manager said, “ITKIB is the beneficiary, representing some 17.000 SMEs in Turkish textile and apparel industry. Throughout the project, a consultancy centre (IDM) a textile and apparel R&D centre (ITA) and a fashion institute (IMA) have been established under a cluster coordination agency (ITKIB DESTEK INC.) As investment support, high technology common use equipment is contracted and bought, and placed in the Istanbul Textilepark campusto open doors in the first quarter of 2008.”
