Mr Wilson further stated, “Investment has been largely by the EU with 100% for the technical assistance and approximately 75 percent for the capital investment. The objectives are to improve the competitiveness of Turkey's textile and apparel SME companies. This was a unique project because we took a clustering approach to the development of our objectives. The total investment has been approximately 20 million Euros.”
Mr Keerthi Abeywickrama, Chief Technology Officer of SewEasy Pvt. Ltd, elaborated that they implemented the 'SewEasy Method' a costing and production planning tool at FTC. This technology has gained popularity in Asia for the shirt manufacturer Gerboy Tekstil.
According to Mr Abeywickrama, “We expect more manufacturers would choose to apply professional costing and planning tools, especially based on Gerboy Tekstil experience.”
Ms Bektas said, “The project objectives were to establish the above mentioned institutions and contract the common use equipment which have already been achieved. Our expectation now is to “include” as many of our stakeholders – SMEs, industrial associations, universities, local, national and international counterparts, NGOs and governmental organizations - to disseminate the effect, increase networking, innovation and R&D capacity, and to share knowledge and know-how.”
Project Director also confirmed that the project plans are already in action. The Fashion Institute is completed and is all set to start part time courses for industry in November. It will take full time students as of from September 2008. The Research and Development Centre is under construction and will be equipped by February 2008 and operation shortly after. The consultancy Centre is currently being developed and will be operational in the very near future.
