Bangladesh grabs 10% share in US apparel market amid China slowdown

China has been losing apparel market share in the United States in recent years, while its neighbouring country Bangladesh has been gaining ground. Trade tensions between the US and China are proving beneficial for Bangladesh. Trade data reveal that Bangladesh’s share in the US apparel market reached double digits in the first quarter of 2025.

The US imported apparel worth $21.034 billion during January–March 2025. Imports from Bangladesh amounted to $2.220 billion, accounting for 10.56 per cent of total apparel imports. Imports from China stood at $3.979 billion, or 18.92 per cent of the total, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

In the same quarter of the previous year, US apparel imports totalled $18.947 billion. Imports from China and Bangladesh were valued at $3.780 billion and $1.754 billion, respectively, contributing 19.95 per cent and 9.26 per cent. China’s share declined to 18.92 per cent, while Bangladesh’s share rose to 10.56 per cent in Q1 2025.

US apparel imports from China increased by 5.26 per cent in Q1 2025 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Imports from Bangladesh surged by 26.56 per cent in the same period. This strong growth helped Bangladesh boost its share to double digits.

Total US apparel imports stood at $83.705 billion in 2024. Of this, imports from China were $18.303 billion (21.97 per cent) and from Bangladesh $7.404 billion (8.85 per cent).

In 2023 and 2022, US apparel imports totalled $81.542 billion and $105.249 billion, respectively. Imports from China were valued at $17.808 billion (21.84 per cent) in 2023 and $23.670 billion (22.49 per cent) in 2022. Bangladesh’s shipments to the US were $7.248 billion (8.89 per cent) and $9.807 billion (9.32 per cent) in the same years, as per TexPro.

China’s share dropped to 18.92 per cent in January–March 2025 from 22.49 per cent in 2022, while Bangladesh’s share rose to 10.56 per cent in Q1 2025 from 9.32 per cent two years earlier.
