The country has continued to see an increase in clothing imports in recent months, following a decline during several previous months and FY24.
Additionally, Japan saw a 14.2 per cent year-on-year increase in its textile yarn and fabric imports in July 2024, which totalled 108,080 million yen and accounted for 1.1 per cent of total imports.
Japan's exports of textile yarn and fabric rose by 8.2 per cent compared to the same period, reaching 72,547 million yen. In contrast, exports of textile machinery fell by 28.1 per cent during the same period, amounting to 21,282 million yen and contributing 0.2 per cent to total exports.
During the first half of the current year, the country’s imports of clothing and accessories increased by 6.9 per cent to 1,686,160 million yen (approximately $11.087 billion). However, its imports of textile yarn and fabric decreased by 1.3 per cent to 561,889 million yen. Japan's exports of textile yarn and fabric increased by 8.9 per cent to 403,331 million yen, while shipments of textile machinery dropped by 20.3 per cent to 128,147 million yen in the same period.
During fiscal 2023-24 (April to March), Japan's imports of clothing and accessories were 3,564,850 million yen (approximately $23.107 billion), marking a decrease of 1.7 per cent. Imports of textile yarn and fabric fell by 10.4 per cent to 1,143,805 million yen. In the same fiscal, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric valued at 802,178 million yen, while textile machinery exports amounted to 320,947 million yen.
In fiscal 2022-23, Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories were 3,619,550 million yen (approximately $25.05 billion), and textile yarn and fabric imports totalled 1,275,608 million yen. During the same fiscal, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric valued at 776,999 million yen, while textile machinery exports amounted to 306,781 million yen.
