The country witnessed a rise in clothing imports after a period of decline in the last several months and the previous fiscal, FY24.
Additionally, Japan saw a 7.2 per cent year-on-year increase in its textile yarn and fabric imports in April 2024, totalling 100,918 million yen, accounting for 1.1 per cent of total imports.
Japan's exports of textile yarn and fabric increased by 7.3 per cent compared to the same period, reaching 71,535 million yen, while exports of textile machinery dropped by 25.8 per cent during the same period, amounting to 20,722 million yen and contributing 0.3 per cent to total exports.
During fiscal 2023-24 (April to March), Japan's imports of clothing and accessories were 3,564,850 million yen (approximately $23.107 billion), marking a drop of 1.7 per cent. Imports of textile yarn and fabric eased by 10.4 per cent to 1,143,805 million yen. During the same fiscal, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric valued at 802,178 million yen, while textile machinery exports amounted to 320,947 million yen. In fiscal 2022-23, Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories were 3,619,550 million yen (approximately $25.05 billion), and textile yarn and fabric imports were 1,275,608 million yen. During the same fiscal, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric valued at 776,999 million yen, while textile machinery exports amounted to 306,781 million yen.
