Age-old Chikankari of Lucknow – still spreading its magic

Lucknow's Chikankari embroidery is synonymous with the city's heritage.
A significant aspect of this ancient art is that it has helped to bind together Hindus and Muslims with a common thread with both united in keeping alive this traditional art form.
Chikankari is not only a means of livelihood for them but also about giving vent to their creativity and acts as a uniting force.
Chikan art work involves many knots and is done entirely by hand without the help of machines. Intricate designs are created with needle, thread work and magic of fingers.
Printing is done initially and then designs of various patterns like murli, ghaas-patti, bakhia, open work pattern, jali (lace) or shadow-work is done over the print by hand, without the use of any machine.
This age-old art is believed to be the legacy of Jehangir's beautiful wife, Noorjehan which has is now become a world-famous craft. Serving as an example of communal amity, the craft has managed to hold together many generations of Hindus and Muslims.
