If you think western styles are just for ranchers and cowboys, Karen Ross is prepared to change your mind. Ross hopes to bring a touch of western elegance to people from Newport Beach to New England with her Colorado-based Prairie Karen jewelry and accessory line, found.

"These pieces work perfectly with anything you're wearing at the moment," she says of her unique line of silver and leather pieces, beaded bracelets and purses, and hair accessories.

Ross' love of western culture and jewelry dates back to her childhood spent working and playing on an expansive Texas ranch owned by her father, founder of Houston's prominent Becker's Jewelers.

The Prairie Karen line features high quality all hand-made pieces and one-of-a-kind items, including hard-to-find braided rawhide bracelets, created by mostly American designers located in Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Idaho and California.

"No matter how you're dressed, I have something in my collection that will complement your outfit," Ross said. "You'll have no choice but to love it."

Many items, like Ross's 100% silk scarves, are as functional as they are stylish. "It'll keep you warm while horseback riding out on the prairie, and looks great with a Cartier watch," Ross said.

Having started Prairie Karen after years spent selling the wares of others, Ross chooses the items that will bear the Prairie Karen name with great care.

"I look high and low for the best pieces," she said. "I look for things that I'd wear on the range or on the town. I also look for designers with whom I can establish long-term working relationships."
