The company displayed a sign outside the store announcing its closure, stating: “Dear customers, please be informed that this Zara store will cease operations after the end of business on February 23. We will continue to assist you at all our Zara stores in Mumbai and at ZARA.COM/IN.”
The retail store spread over 51,300 square feet in the iconic five-storey building was opened in 2017 following extensive restoration by conservation architects Kirtida Unwalla and Mona Sanghvi, in collaboration with Zara's in-house architectural team.
Zara stores in India are operated by Inditex Trent, a joint venture between Spain’s Inditex and Tata Group’s retail arm, Trent Ltd, with a 65:35 partnership. The flagship store, which was India’s largest Zara outlet, was leased for ₹30 crore (~$3.6 million) annually from Supariwala Exports, with a 15-year tenure and a five-year lock-in period. However, the outlet was deemed economically unviable, leading to its closure, as per Indian media reports.
Zara now has only three stores in Mumbai, located in Lower Parel, Kurla, and Thane.
