There will be a fine display of contemporary textiles in a special exhibition which opens in Aberdeen on Saturday October 7, marking the centenary of the foundation of the Embroiderers' Guild.

Aberdeen Art Gallery, the fifth and final venue for “A Scottish Celebration” until November 25, will feature the work Kathleen Whyte, of one of the 20th century's greatest exponents of the craft, in addition to contemporary textiles created by Scottish members.

Aiming at bringing embroidery to as wide an audience as possible, the show promotes the creative ideas and skills of members of the 38 Scottish branches.

From 240 submissions Scotland-wide, work by 100 artists including young embroiderers has been selected in order to ensure that the skills of the craft are being passed on.

Members' work includes two and three-dimensional pieces, large wall hangings, small textiles, costumes and accessories in wide-ranging colour, subject matter and technique.
