Surat and Kolkata – the two leading sari manufacturing states of the country seem to be up in arms with each other. Thousand of pamphlets are under circulation in Surat's textile markets, wherein some unnamed sari manufacturers from Kolkata have claimed that some of the sari manufacturers from Surat are copying their excellent designs and this has reduced the popularity of Kolkata's genuine hand-embroidered saris.

Embroiders from the textile city of Surat have been dominating over markets all across India with their brilliantly designed silk and synthetic saris and dress materials. These embroidered sari manufacturers from Surat, after giving the Banarasi hand-weavers of embroidered saris a challenge are now focusing on the profitable market in Kolkata.

Some unknown sari manufacturers from Kolkata have claimed in the pamphlet that, the embroidery manufacturers from Surat actually capture their genuine hand-made embroidery designs in their cameras while they pay a visit to Kolkata. They then feed these designs in computer to create exact designs on the polyester and silk saris.

With these charges the sari manufacturers of Kolkata have appealed the manufacturers in Surat to avoid participating in the upcoming sari exposition to take place in Goa in mid-December.

Surat, over the last few years, has surfaced as a major player in the embroidery sector. The city's embroidery industry which started with some hundred embroidery machines, now houses over 70,000 high-end machines brought in from Taiwan, Japan and China.

The main reason underlying this change is the cost efficiency of Surat's embroidery industry, which is because, the industry here mainly uses up-to-date computerized machinery which reduces the embroidery cost to less than half then those prevailing in the Kolkata markets.
