Handloom industry of Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh (AP) has been affected by high prices of raw material for silk sarees.
The region is a base for more than 1.5 lakh people dependent on silk handloom industry.
The price of silk yarn, which was Rs1,200 per Kg, has increased to Rs1,700.
Though there is hike in the prices of raw materials, silk saree prices have remained stable.
Consequently, weavers have stopped producing silk sarees for the last one week in Dharmavaram, Somandepalle, Chennekothapalle and Gorantla, and have demonstrated against the hike in the prices of silk yarn.
This closure might affect silk sarees production in Dharmvaram, where business sizes is about Rs5-8 crores, everyday.
This decline in production has forced the traders to explore in new business territories of their choice.
