Resorting to eco-friendly, sustainable activities is likely to bring down the overall expenditure in the textile industry as it involves making the optimum use of resources in the best manner possible, industry experts claim.

Speaking to Fibre2Fashion, Bruce Rockowitz, Group President and CEO, Li and Fung comments, a factory’s sustainability initiatives may touch on traditional environment management, to developing human resources management systems for calculating proper wage payments, and to lean manufacturing techniques for reducing wastage of materials. All of this should make good business sense to factory owners because it ultimately increases the profitability of their business.

“It’s good for everyone involved – workers, retailers, us – when a factory’s business is truly sustainable and grows as a result,” he avers.

According to Mr. Ashraful Hassan, Managing Director, Grameen Knitwear Ltd., a committed company should take sustainability initiatives. Using innovative products and efficient machines helps to mitigate the biggest sustainability challenges – carbon emissions and the consumption and pollution of water.

“Since the last two years, Grameen reduced energy, natural resources, and fossil fuel through energy efficient production, renewable energy utilization, and through motivating workers to not waste energy and resources, thereby increasing productivity,” he continues.

“Sustainability practices contribute on profit as well as create a healthy working environment. Moreover, sustainability activities are positive way forward so it has positive impact on product quality,” he concludes.
