Outstanding success at Graduate Fashion Week in London

James also won the RSA Menswear 2006 Award in June this year, for which he was given a £5,200 bursary and offered a six month work placement with John Lewis.

Fellow student Eva Alberici, 24, from Jesmond, was also nominated for the River Island Gold Award, making Northumbria the only institution in the show to have more than one nomination. Eva's collection was highly commended by the judges and she is currently being headhunted by a leading design brand.

Northumbria's fashion Marketing students also picked up a number of top prizes.

Michelle Alexander 23, from North Shields took away the Accessories Award for her collection of fashionable dog accessories including coats, leads and collars. The judges commended her for the breadth of thinking involved in her campaign which tapped into pet owners deep seated love of animals, linking the purchase of the accessories to contributions to dog charities.

Irene Burley, 23, from Sheffield, won the Strategic Marketing Award, for her ideas and plans to promote and build her brand of children's wear, designed by herself.

And finally, Claire O'Reilly, 23, from Woking, Surrey, bagged the £5,000 River Island Brand Development Award for her work in the field of Character Merchandising. Claire has attracted a lot of interest in her work from a number of companies who are interested in developing the characters for a number of merchandising opportunities..
