40 of Spain's leading footwear designers reinterpret Bizet's Carmen.
Milano ai piedi di Carmen / 40 designer spagnoli di calzature reinterpretano la Carmen is the title of the top-end Spanish footwear exhibition organised by the Spanish Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX) and the Spanish Economic and Trade Office in Milan in conjunction with the Spanish Footwear Industries Federation (FICE). The aim of the event is to demonstrate the design, quality and extensive scope of Spanish footwear.
The exhibition will open in Milan from September 22 to 25 at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano on Via Rivoli. It has been organised to coincide with MICAM II, one of the world's most important footwear fairs, host to 1,500 exhibitors, of which 163 will come from Spain.
Some of Spain's major footwear labels will be represented at the event. Drawing on their extensive creative resources, they have produced unique and timeless footwear of the kind Bizet's Carmen might herself have worn, reflecting values that are typically Spanish and yet universal, like strength, passion and character.
The exhibition seeks to be a true reflection of the character depicted in Bizet's opera, but has given designers the freedom to interpret her as they see fit. The venue has been designed to resemble a stage set, where the famous mantón de Manila silk shawl, as worn by Seville's cigar sellers, serves as a link to evoke key musical passages.
“Milan at Carmen's feet” will providea spectacular setting for Spanish footwear, revealing an art – as charming and provocative as the temptress by which it is inspired – which sets global trends.
