Ministry of Textiles released the 2005 year end result of textiles.
Growth in the textile sector has been stirring. Production of fabrics has gone from 39844 million square metres in 2001-2002 to 43498 million square metre during 2004-2005.
The per capita availability of cloth has gone up from 22.9 square metres in 1991-92 to about 31.0 square metres in 2003-04 (Provisional).
Sector/fibre-wise details of production of yarn and cloth during last three years and current years (upto September 2005) are given at Annexure – I.
While exports of textiles (including handicrafts, jute, and coir) formed 24.6 percent of total exports from India in 2001-2002, this percentage has decreased to 16.24 percent during the year 2004-05.
Details of textile exports are given at Annexure II. As per latest export figures available (in Rs) for April-August, 2005, except man made textiles (-16.4 percent), all sectors shown positive growth i.e. Readymade Garment (12.3 percent), Cotton textiles (0.3 percent), Wool (30.5 percent), Silk (2.1 percent), Handicrafts (17.8 percent), Coir & Coir manufactures (16.0 percent) and Jute Goods (13.7 percent).
Though the growth has improved over the years, it is much less compared to the growth of some of our neighbors like China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc. As per the latest available WTO data, India's percentage share in the global textiles and clothing trade during 2003 is 4.8 percent and 3.5 percent respectively.
