Textiles & cotton products record highest growth in November

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of November 2005 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The General Index stands at 216.7, which is 6.9% higher as compared to the level in the month of November 2004.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of November 2005 stand at 151.6, 229.7, and 182.0 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of (-)1.4%, 8.1% and 2.7% as compared to November 2004. The cumulative growth during April-November, 2005-06 over the corresponding period of 2004-05 in the three sectors are 0.5%, 9.4% and 4.9% respectively, with the overall growth rate of General Index being 8.3%.

In terms of industries, as many as fourteen (14) out of the seventeen (17) industry groups (as per 2- digit NIC-1987) have shown positive growth during the month of November 2005 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The industry group 'Other Manufacturing Industries' has shown the highest growth of 21.3%, followed by 15.9% in 'Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel)' and 13.3% in 'Cotton Textiles'.

On the other hand, the industry group 'Leather and Leather & Fur Products' have shown a negative growth of 15.8% followed by a decline of 4.1% in 'Wood and Wood Product; Furniture and Fixtures' and 0.5% in 'Paper & Paper Products and Printing, Publishing & Allied Industries'.
