Padmahri awardee and eminent Malyalam filmmaker Shri Adoor Gopalakrishnan was the Convocation Speaker this year. Adoor, who came to national limelight with his very first film Swayamvaram made in the year 1972, is arguably one of the most sensitive Indian filmmakers of recent times. Swayamvaram won him the National Award for best film, best director, best cinematographer and best actress, thus setting an enviable record of sorts.
His film, Kathapurushan also won him the National Award for the best feature film. He has won the National Award for best director four times, and best script writer thrice. His films have been shown in, Cannes , Berlin , Venice , Rotterdam , and Toronto , and every important festival around the world.
Adoor's third feature film, Elippathayam won him the coveted British Film Institute Award for the most original and imaginative film of 1982. The International Film Critics Prize (FIPRESCI) has gone to him five times successively for Mukhamukham , Anantaram , Mathilukal , Vidheyan and Kathapurushan .
His collection of essays, The World of Cinema was given the National Award for the Best Book on Cinema in 1984. NID has also organized a retrospective of his films at its auditorium from January 21-25, 2006 . Shri Adoor Gopalakrishnan inaugurated the retrospect of his films with the screening of Nizhalkkuthu in the morning of the convocation at NID Auditorium.
While the young faculty members are taking up responsibilitiesand challenges with great gusto, the senior faculty members have moved on to new roles in Institution building. The student profile has also undergone considerable changes with its population swelling to 650 as against 350 in the year 2000. The newly acquired research focus of the Institute has helped it set up two research chairs for breakthrough innovations and IPR.
