Saurer has passed a further important milestone towards realizing their nonwoven strategy - the development of a complete nonwoven technology platform. Saurer was originally a supplier for the nonwoven industry with the development of spinning components through their Neumag business unit. With the acquisition of Ason, Neumag established themselves as a supplier of turnkey machines in the strategically important spunbond segment.

Through M&J Fibretech, their competence in nonwoven manufacturing with airlaid processes, i.e. the manufacturing of nonwovens out of short fibers such as pulp, could be further developed. With their majority participation in Autefa, Saurer covered the important field of cross-laying.

Together with the acquisition of Fehrer, the portfolio now includes the main elements for producing carded nonwovens from long fibres. Additionally Fehrer's needle punching technology complements the spunbonding process by an important bonding method.

This gives Saurer access to new, important market segments such as automotive, carpets or geotextiles. The contract was signed to take over 100% of the share capital of the textile machine factory Dr. Ernst Fehrer AG, Linz, Austria. The take-over still has to be approved by the Monopolies Commissions.

Fehrer ranks among the worldwide leading suppliers of needle punching machines for the nonwoven and textile industry. Furthermore, Fehrer manufactures carding lines with the aerodynamic web forming principle and DREF friction spinning machines.
