Sumitomo Chemical Co. has reduced the operating rates of its Caprolactam (CPL) plant located in Niihama, Ehime prefecture.

According to a Sumitomo official who spoke to fibre2fashion, they are currently operating the Niihama CPL plant at 50% production rates.

Giving reasons for doing so, he said, “We are facing a reduced demand from our Chinese buyers, as Chinese CPL suppliers are aggressively selling the raw material in the China market”.

They plan to increase production rates to around 70% in the near future, depending on the market conditions. He also added that demand for CPL in Japan is more or less steady right now.

The CPL plant comprises of two lines with production capacities of 100,000 tons per annum and 80,000 tons per annum, respectively.
