Maharashtra occupies second position in cotton production at 29 lakh bales only next to Gujarat. But the yield in this state is one of the lowest due to various reasons, particularly lack of irrigation and unrestricted supply of low quality seeds.

Under this backdrop, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry-Cotton Development & Research Association (CITI-CDRA) under the Chairmanship of Shri P D. Patodia, had undertaken Front Line Demonstration (FLD) in Saoner and Kalameshwar Talukas of Nagpur District to promote Yield and Quality of cotton production with Technology Mission on Cotton (TMC) for the year 2005-06.

The FLD comprises supply of quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides etc free of charge to 1000 cotton farmers in 1000 acres land in 14 villages of Saoner and Kalameshwar Talukas. Under the FLD Programme, Kissan Melas, Farmers' Field Days, Training Programmes on Modern Methods of Cultivation, Slide Shows, Distribution of pamphlets and fortnightly bulletins, Field Visits, Timely advice and guidance by scientists were conducted in the Project Areas.

The Varieties like Bunny, Rasi-2 Bt., A-09 and A-651 had been cultivated in this project.

A marked improvement was noticed in yield and quality of cotton production on the basis of Survey conducted to assess the benefits of this FLD Programme in the demonstrated field (DF) vis-à-vis non-demonstrated fields (NDF). The Yield/Acre of DF was 491 kgs. compared to 314 kgs. on NDF, Sales (Revenue)per Acre was Rs.9827/- in DF compared to Rs.6285/- in NDF. Net Profit per Acre in DF was Rs.5493/- compared to Rs.1952/- in NDF, though Cost of Production per Acre has remained stagnant at Rs.4334/-.
