ARTHUR WELHAM, 57, is the new president of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC), the world's only professional body and educational charity dedicated to the science, technology and application of colour. He takes over from Peter Diggle.
After graduating from Manchester University in 1969, Arthur worked for Courtaulds for six years before joining a small cotton dyehouse in Rochdale as dyehouse manager.
Two years later he joined Webron Products working on chemical finishes of technical textiles and, in 1978, moved to Sandoz where he worked on wool dyeing and the dyeing of cellulosic blends before taking up his first position abroad with Sandoz in the USA in 1990.
In 1992 he was appointed as executive vice-president of the Sclavos USA Inc, the US affiliate of the Greek dyeing machine manufacturer.
Two years later he returned to the UK to work for IDI (Europe) before moving to Crompton and Knowles (UK) Ltd where he worked as chief executive until the take over by Yorkshire Chemicals in 2000.
After a short period as industry manager for Europe, Africa and Asia, Arthur left Yorkshire to work for Duraflex SA de CV in El Salvador, principally to oversee the commissioning of a new cotton dyehouse with a capacity of 500 tonnes per week.
After this contract ended he rejoined Sclavos as an international technical consultant and during the last four years has run major consultancy projects in Malaysia, China, India and El Salvador, as well as working on shorter projects in South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Singapore, Turkey and the Dominican Republic.
