Industrial production erodes by 0.6% in euro area

Eurostat announces seasonally adjusted industrial production1 fell by 0.6 percent in the euro area2 in April 2006 compared to March. Production grew by 0.6 percent in March3 after remaining stable in February. Output in the EU25 fell by 0.1 percent in April, after increasing by 0.5 percent in March and remaining stable in February.

In April 2006 compared to April 2005, industrial production rose by 1.9 percent in the euro area and by 2.1 percent in the EU25. Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, releases these estimates.

Monthly comparison
In April 2006 compared to March 2006 production of intermediate goods decreased by 0.2 percent in the euro area, but grew by 0.5 percent in the EU25. Non-durable consumer goods fell by 0.4 percent and 0.6 percent respectively.

Capital goods dropped by 0.7 percent in the euro area, but remained stable in the EU25. Durable consumer goods declined by 0.9 percent and 0.5 percent respectively. Production of energy fell by 2.7 percent in the euro area and by 2.1 percent in the EU25.

In April 2006, and among the Member States for which data are available, industrial production rose in seven Member States and fell in fourteen. The highest increases were registered in Ireland (+7.6 percent), Luxembourg (+2.0 percent), Sweden (+1.2 percent) and Finland (+1.0 percent), while the largest decreases were recorded in Portugal (-5.6 percent), Lithuania (-5.0 percent), the Czech Republic (-2.4percent) and Greece (-2.1 percent).
