EU25 new orders rise 0.4% in April 2006

Eurostat announces that the euro area1 industrial new orders index2 fell by 0.2 percent in April 2006 compared to March 2006. The index decreased by 1.6 percent in March3 and increased by 3.6 percent in February.

EU25 new orders grew by 0.4 percent in April 2006, after a fall of 1.2 percent in March3 and a rise of 1.0 percent in February. Excluding ships, railway and aerospace equipment4, in April 2006 industrial new orders grew by 2.3 percent in the euro area and by 1.7 percent in the EU25.

In April 2006 compared to April 2005, industrial new orders increased by 4.4 percent in the euro area and by 4.1 percent in the EU25. Total industry excluding ships, railway and aerospace equipment grew by 5.9 percent in the euro area and by 5.3 percent in the EU25

Monthly changes
In April 2006 compared to March 2006, basic metals and fabricated metal products increased by 5.2 percent in the euro area and by 5.3 percent in the EU25. Chemicals and chemical products grew by 3.3 percent and 3.2 percent respectively.

Manufacturing of textiles and textile products rose by 1.2 percent in the euro area and remained stable in the EU25. In the EU25, machinery and equipment grew by 5.2 percent and electrical and electronic equipment by 3.8 percent, while transport equipment fell by 1.9 percent.

In April 2006, and among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in eight Member States and fell in eight. The highest increases were recorded in Denmark (+10.1 percent), Hungary (+8.1 percent), Italy (+6.3 percent) and the Netherlands (+6.1 percent). The largest decreases were registered in Latvia (-33.3 percent), France (-5.9 percent) and Belgium (-5.7 percent).
