AWIS completes week with 0.5% rise in sales

In a two day sale in Sydney and a three day sale in Melbourne, the AWEX EMI, rose by 4¢ on Tuesday, by 4¢ again on Wednesday and deceased by 2¢ on Thursday. The Western Indicator, in a two day sale, rose by 1¢ on Wednesday and remained the same on Thursday.

Merino fleece types, and more so among the fine wools, sold at firm to dearer prices over the first two days before the medium and broader wools eased slightly yesterday. Skirtings were in good demand all week.

Crossbreds generally gained over the first two days and held onto those gains on Thursday. In a mixed week, oddments opened on a weaker note on Tuesday and fluctuated over the next two days.

Buyers for China were dominant with the weaker currency attracting stronger support than previously seen this season from some Chinese suppliers.

Sales will be held in Newcastle, Melbourne and Fremantle next week, when 64,062 bales are currently rostered for sale.

The current forecasts over the following four weeks show likely offerings of between 64,000 and 65,000 bales, except for Week 14 when there is no Fremantle sale.

In South African sales this week, their market was quoted as 0.1 percent up but on the basis of a weaker Rand.

ABS export statistics for July show a 7.0 percent increase in exports (4.5 percent in value) when compared with July last year. 63.2 percent of exports went to China viz a viz 65.7 percent 12 months ago.
