Stock water is also looming as a critical issue in the 2006/07 season across the eastern states. Due to a prolonged period of dry conditions, current dam levels are low and so far this Spring there has been minimal run-off into dams.
Dr David James said unless widespread and heavy rains occur in the next few months, which appears increasingly unlikely, some woolgrowers will be faced with the burden of not only a lack of feed for sheep but also of water.
This will mean additional premature shearings of sheep normally shorn in full wool in the second half of the season and also lower overall numbers of sheep shorn in 2006/07.
