This was well received and also served to highlight the diversity of views surrounding the issues of environmental sustainability within the textile industry, sparking a lively question and answer session.
Throughout the day, delegates were taken on a colourful journey – navigating colour space with Dan Randall (Datacolor, USA), understanding cross-media colour reproduction with Ronnier Luo (University of Leeds, UK) and reliving history with Adam Hart-Davis, who spoke of the invention that saw the birth of the chemical industry 150 years ago when William Henry Perkin discovered the first synthetic dye.
Modern day innovations were also featured by a number of speakers including Becky Hurd (Nike, USA) on the development of Olympic thermoregulating advanced sportswear; Edward Menezes (Rossari Biotech, India) on the utilisation of nano-, cosmeto-and plasma-technology finishes for intelligent textiles.
And Tony Ryan (University of Sheffield, UK) on the novel use of polymers to create coatings, from subtle holographic effects to more complicated 3D formulations; and David Lewis (University of Leeds, UK) covering new frontiers in digital printing, e.g. the use of metals in electronic devices/circuitry.
SDC Vice-President for fashion and design, Chris Sargeant, commented after the event, 'The conference proved to be an outstanding success, and delegates left feeling enthused, enlightened and entertained. Whatever their background, delegates will have gained knowledge and information that will be of value to them and their business.'
