It can be legitimately assumed that, during the year 2005, Asia will outperform the others and will become the No.1 client for the Italian constructors of Italian leather-products manufacturing machinery. And all of this is more in line and more "logical" as regards the evolution of the sector's manufacturing activity. Further confirmation is provided by the North- and South American market's 38.26% growth during 2004 and the fact that it accounts for 16.89% of our export business.
Fortunately, the tanning machine sector is going in another direction. In contrast to the shoe and leather-goods manufacturing machines, its export business has shown a 6.71% increase. While export performance was good during the first 6 months of the year, it had a downward trend during the second 6 months, a trend that continued during the first part of 2005. What makes the 6.71% increase particularly interesting is that it was made possible by the increase in the exports to China. As regards tanning machinery, Asia is by far the most interesting area. In 2004, with an increase of almost 24%, it accounted for 43.82% of our export business. Today, America accounts for 23,27% of our export business and Europe only 24.37%.
These few arithmetic values go a long way in providing the present picture regarding the degree of difficulty that the leather-products technological sector is having to face. Unfortunately, this does not come as a surprise, and the two aspects of the crisis ? economical and structural, both of which go hand in hand ? are further aggravated by the extremely discomforting conditions forced upon each of those operating in the various sectors (shoe, leather-products and tanning).
