Value of wool knitwear imports from China up for Jan-June 2006

EU-15 imports of wool knitwear increased solidly in value terms during January-June 2006, compared with January-June 2005, while knitwear imports by quantity (pieces) declined nominally during the same period.

EU-15 knitwear imports from China have shown a significant deceleration in volume during the first half (H1) of 2006, most likely due to the fact that knitwear is one of the 10 product categories under the June 2005 EU/China Textiles Agreement which limited the import rate of growth by 10 percent in 2006 and 199.7m pieces.

Although the volume of wool knitwear imports from China declined in the first half of this year, the unit price has now increased significantly.

The value of wool knitwear imports from China increased by almost a quarter for January-June 2006, compared with last year to become the leading EU-15 supplier by value, displacing Italy.

The unit price of imported wool knitwear from China rose by over 6 Euro/piece in January-June 2006 compared to the same period a year earlier.
