Cotton industry overview

The number of factories and plant units of cotton spinning companies added up to 33 and 52 in September 2006 in contrast to the previous year's figure of 39 and 56. Compared to August 2006, no changes were registered.

The number of cotton weaving mills was 76, two mills or 2.5 percent less than the year before. 106 units were listed in September 2006, a decrease of three units.

There was no change compared to the previous month as well. In comparison to the preceding year the employment figures of the cotton spinning companies dropped by 6.5 percent to 4,165.

This accounts for a plus of 0.6 percent compared to August. Taking a look at the weaving sector, the figure decreased by 6 percent to 8,709 employees.

The turn-over of the cotton spinning companies amounted to 339.5 million Euros from January to September of this year, which corresponds to a decline of 5.9 percent or 21.2 million Euros compared to the respective months of the year before.

A total of 190.0 million Euros has been realised within Germany (minus 8.2 percent) and a total of 149.5 million
Euros in the export business (minus 2.7 percent).

During the first nine months of the current year, the turn-over in the cotton weaving industry totaled 831.8 million Euros, which is a reduction of 0.6 percent in comparison to the same period of the previous year.

The total amount of the inland business registered a minus of 1.8 percent to 459.8 million Euros, whereas the result in exports rose by 0.9 percent to 372.0 million Euros.
