Eschborn (hm) Awareness of the label “Confidence in textiles – Tested for harmful substances according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100” has almost doubled over the past four years.

That is the result of a representative survey conducted by GfK Market Research, Nürnberg, between 6 and 13 October 2006 on behalf of the German Oeko-Tex Certification Centre involving 1,046 people over the age of 14 in Germany.

At 46 percent, almost half of all those questioned in the study on textile symbols stated that they recognised the Oeko-Tex test label. In 2002, the label was known by a mere 24 percent of the population.

In terms of the importance of individual aspects when purchasing textiles, the quality (89 percent) and price (86 percent) of the products continues to play the most important role for the consumer.

In third place, at 79 percent, comes the skin compatibility of clothing and other textile articles.

This quality feature has increased compared to the previous survey, similarly to the factors “textiles tested for harmful substances” (55 percent compared to 42 percent in 2002) and “environmentally-friendly production” (45 percent compared to 35 percent four years ago).

Overall, it can be seen that there has been a significant increase in the level of awareness of the safety of textiles and environmental protection amongst the population - both trends which the Oeko-Tex Association has been actively addressing since the 1990s with their tests for harmful substances according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and the certification of environmentally-friendly production sites according to Oeko-Tex Standard 1000.
