One of Cotton Australia's longest serving Directors, Mr Bernie George stepped down from his post as Chairman of the industry's peak grower body, with Mungindi cotton grower, Joanne Grainger elected to the Chair.

Mr George has served on the Cotton Australia Board for nine years, seeing the industry through many challenges, including years of tireless lobbying at State and Federal levels in the water debate.

Mrs Grainger steps up to the Chair position at a very difficult time for the industry and Cotton Australia, with last season seeing the smallest crop in 20 years and the cotton industry in the spotlight with water management on the national agenda.

“This is certainly one of the toughest periods that I've experienced in the cotton industry, but we have survived many challenges before. We must not forget that cotton continues to be a critical agricultural industry for Australia, and for the many rural communities it supports that are struggling through this drought,” Mrs Grainger said.

“Cotton Australia will continue to fight for grower's rights and represent their interests to all levels of government, particularly in this election year and with a new National Plan for Water Security on the table,” Mrs Grainger said.

“There has never been a more critical time for growers to have a strong, focused organisation to represent them, and I urge all in the industry to continue to support Cotton Australia in whatever ways they can,” she said.
