On 27 September 2007, the internationally renowned Textile Research and Testing Centre at the Hohenstein Institutes in Bönnigheim celebrated the official opening of its new Service and Innovation building.

The proud owner, Head of the Institute Dr. Stefan Mecheels, welcomed about 120 invited guests, including the Minister of Economic Affairs Ernst Pfister (MdL) and Landrat (chief administrative officer) Dr. Rainer Haas, to the afternoon's celebrations: "Today we are celebrating the official opening of our Service and Innovation building, an event which represents a very special milestone in the present and future development of the Hohenstein Institutes."

"On the edge of the vineyards, with views over the valley of the Neckar and the old loop in the river, a modern new building has arisen, providing us with 1700 m2 of additional space. This means that our existing space is increased by about 25 per cent. The cost of the building and its fixtures and fittings amounted to a total of 3.7 million euros. That makes it the largest ever investment in the 60-year history of the Hohenstein Institutes. The money was raised entirely from private resources."

Dr. Mecheels thanked the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Württemberg state foundation) for funds amounting to 1.5 million euros which were also made available for this non-profit-making branch of research. These have been used to acquire new scientific equipment.

In his welcoming address, the Landrat from Lundwigsburg, Dr. Rainer Haas, emphasised the close ties between the Hohenstein Institutes and the local region.
