Cotton Australia is pleased to report that it has finalised negotiations with the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Water and signed an agreement that formally recognises BMP certification as an alternative for cotton growers who have been asked to develop a statutory Land and Water Management Plan (LWMP). The development of a LWMP is a requirement enshrined in the Queensland Water Act.
The accreditation agreement brings to an end a long process of negotiation which has centred on Cotton Australia demonstrating that BMP Certification is a true demonstration of good environmental risk management.
By participating in the agreement the Queensland Government has demonstrated its willingness to support farmers who voluntarily invest in good natural resource management.
With this significant, landmark agreement in place, Certified BMP cotton growers will be in a position to avoid the extra costs and time of developing a LWMP and instead use their BMP Certification in a practical and tangible way.
Cotton Australia will be sending out further, detailed information to all growers to explain how the accreditation agreement will work and how they can ensure they receive full benefit from this outcome.
