According to the results of the microcensus of Statistics Austria, 4 095 000 Austrians were employed and 196 000 unemployed in the third quarter 2007. These figures were determined according to the international definition (EU-ratios).
In comparison with last year's quarter, the number of persons employed increased by 70 000 or 1.7 % and, correspondingly, the employment ratio of 15 to 64-year-olds (fraction of persons employed of the entire population) increased from 71.9% in the third quarter of 2006 to 72.5%.
The increase in employment, as shown by the microcensus, goes in line with the overall tendency of the quarters passed. With respect to unemployment, however, the microcensus shows a trend for the third quarter 2007, which deviates from the statistics of the AMS (Public Employment Service Austria).
The number of persons unemployed exceeds last year's quarter's by 16 000 and the unemployment ratio amounts to 4.6% (last years figure: 4.3%). The increase can be explained by the intensified influx of young person into the labour market over the months July and August. Many of these do not receive insurance services from the AMS because of lack of insurance periods; thus, they are not covered by the AMS' statistics.
Moreover, the economically favourable situation may encourage new groups of persons to look for jobs, or may cause them to devote more time to their job search than they would in less favourable times.
