The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is going to organize International Symposium / Workshop on Natural Dyes during November 6 to 12, 2006, in India.
Natural dyeing symbolizes craft practices which reflect a harmonious, sustainable relationship with the eco system and the local plant reservoir. It is the unique repository of community knowledge and inherited skills, wherein every region in the world has its own techniques and specialized process of natural dyeing.
Today with the mounting awareness of the damage wreaked on the environment by chemical dyes, the destruction of plant life and pollution of soil and water resources etc, natural dyes are gradually staging a come back.
There is a clear renewal of interest throughout the world in natural dyes which are seen as renewable resources whose potential has to be investigated with ways of optimizing production and development.
The initiative taken by UNESCO to organize an International Symposium/Workshop on natural dyes in India in2006 represents the ideal opportunity to take stock of as fully as possible, current knowledge and practices of natural dyeing in traditional and contemporary textiles in the whole world today.
