The Minister for Textiles, Shri Shankersinh Vaghela, inaugurated the Handicrafts and Handlooms Export Corporation's prestigious building in NOIDA . Speaking on the occasion, the Minister laid stress on the need for credibility of various products and courteous treatment of the customers.
The Minister said that it was not enough for the HHEC to simply add their commission and sit back. They should take an active role in marketing the products, so as to benefit the organization and also the artisans. Shri Vaghela recollected that in the past, artisans were patronized by Rajas and today it was the role of the Government to encourage arts and crafts and keep them alive.
The Minister informed the gathering that in the year 1962, this Corporation was renamed as 'The Handicrafts and Handloom Exports Corporation' and the basic objectives of the Corporation were also changed to incorporate commercial aspects in addition to its developmental activities. The Corporation became an export-oriented unit so that it could earn foreign exchange for the country besides ensuring reasonable remuneration to the weavers and artisans involved in these industries for their craftsmanship.
He added that he was happy to note that HHEC had done an excellent job in creating a name for Indian handicrafts and handloom products in the international market and helped in boosting exports of items manufactured by small craftsmen and weavers, giving them a fair livelihood. Some of the major items of exports, particularly carpets and brass metal-ware were introduced in the world market by the HHEC initially.
