Benzene & PTA prices up, raw silk decline in Mar WPI

The official Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for 'All Commodities' (Base: 1993-94 = 100) for the week ended 25th March 2006 declined by 0.2 percent to 197.0 (Provisional) from 197.4 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 3.96 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 25/03/2006 (over 26/03/2005) as against 4.06 percent (Provisional) for the previous week and 5.10 percent during the corresponding week of the previous year.

Primary Articles (Weight 22.02 percent)
The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 0.1 percent to 174.7 (Provisional) from 174.6 (Provisional) for the previous week. However, the prices of raw silk (16 percent), and cotton seed (1 percent) declined.

Manufactured Products (Weight 63.75 percent)
The index for this major group declined by 0.6 percent to 171.7 (Provisional) from 172.8 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The index for 'Leather & Leather Products' group declined by 5.1 percent to 159.5 (Provisional) from 168.1 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of footwear western type (5 percent).

The index for 'Chemicals & Chemical Products' group rose by 0.1 percent to 188.9 (Provisional) from 188.8 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of benzene (6 percent) and bopp film (2 percent). However, the prices of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) (2 percent) and PVC (p.v.c.) resins and blasting powder (1 percent each) declined.
