Asean Symposium on development of Brunei traditional textiles held

A two-day symposium of the Asean Traditional Symposium organised by Himpunan Wastraprema and hosted by the Asean Secretariat, focused on new ideas, techniques, motifs, research, finance and new methods to preserve, maintain and develop traditional textiles in Asean.
A lecturer at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam in her paper entitled "Inventions of Traditions: Reconstruction of National Identity Through Traditional Textiles in Brunei Darussalam" explained how society and the possible steps could be taken by designers and weavers as well as consumers to sustain production and consumption of traditional woven textiles.
Working papers were also presented by Iwan Tirta of Indonesia on `Batik as an Icon of Indonesia'; Biramul Anas of Indonesia on 'Papanggang, Pasola, and Palai Ngandi: Local Lore and External Influence on the Hinggi of East Sumba'; Onchuma Yuthavong, Thailand on `All for the Love of Textiles'; I Made Rai Artha of Threads of Life, Bali on `Indonesian Indigenous Community Network'; and Josephine (Obin) Komara-of BIN House Lunch on SmallScale Textile Industries in Indonesia: Challenges, Opportunities, and Creativity Indonesian Textiles.
