On the whole, the Italian textile industry registered a turnover of just under 8.8 billion euros in 2005 (-0.2 % less than 2004). These results emphasize a tendency towards stability, despite the reduction in quantities, therefore representing about 22 percent of the entire textile-clothing production line.

The gradual and continuous shift towards superior quality products (and more efficient 'service' factors associated with Made in Italy products) by Italian industries has allowed all sectors to raise prices, above all on foreign markets where over 65 percent of the total turnover is destined.

Even statistics regarding the first few months of 2006 show that both orders and sales are picking up: official ISTAT data on the textile industry (including fabrics and yarns) is positive, although results tend to differ according to the type of firm involved. In other words, rock bottom lows seem to belong to the past, although there is still only a partial upswing.

“We are not referring to an evenly distributed trend – comments Paolo Zegna – and are convinced that the various firms will have to work harder in the future to consolidate their leadership, by focusing on advanced research and quality production, in order to compete with low-cost products from China.”

“Creativity, innovation and efficient services – continues the President of 'Milano Unica' – are the distinctive features of Italian production. We will continue to concentrate on these elements to emphasize the differences between our products and those from other production lines. In addition, we are concerned about conveying a fundamental element, that is, our 'Italian lifestyle', to selective international clientele."
