Apparel & footwear trade association American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA)'s President and CEO Kevin M. Burke praised the Senate for passage of the U.S./Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) last night.

Burke also lauded approval of the CAFTA-DR in the House Ways and Means Committee and urged the full House to take up and pass the agreement as soon as possible.

The Senate approved the CAFTA-DR implementing legislation (S. 1307) by a vote of 54 to 45. This followed by one day a voice vote in the Senate Finance Committee. Earlier yesterday, the House Ways and Means Committee approved its version of the implementing legislation (HR 3045) by a vote of 25 to 16. “These are key votes. Clearly, there is growing momentum toward full passage and implementation of this very important agreement,” noted Burke.

“With 16 out of 20 textile state Senators voting to support CAFTA-DR, there is strong recognition that this agreement is vitally important for the U.S. textile and apparel industry and its Dominican and Central American partners.”

“With associations and companies representing a united textile and apparel supply chain lobbying in support of CAFTA-DR, we will now redouble our efforts in the full House to see that this agreement is swiftly approved later this month,” Burke concluded.

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) is the national trade association representing apparel, footwear and other sewn products companies, and their suppliers, including several dozen U.S. textile companies, which compete in the global market.
