New Orders: New orders for manufactured durable goods in May decreased $6.1 billion or 2.8 percent to $213.0 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This followed three consecutive monthly increases including a 1.1 percent April increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 1.0 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 3.2 percent.
Transportation equipment, down two consecutive months, had the largest decrease, $4.5 billion or 6.8 percent to $62.4 billion. This was led by nondefense aircraft and parts, which decreased $4.1 billion.
Shipments: Shipments of manufactured durable goods in May, up three consecutive months, increased $0.9 billion or 0.4 percent to $214.4 billion. This followed a 2.0 percent April increase. Transportation equipment, up two of the last three months, had the largest increase, $1.0 billion or 1.8 percent to $57.3 billion.
Unfilled Orders: Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in May, up twenty-four of the last twenty-five months, increased $5.8 billion or 0.8 percent to $725.3 billion. This was at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 1.9 percent April increase.
Transportation equipment, up sixteen consecutive months, had the largest increase, $5.1 billion or 1.3 percent to $410.3 billion.
Inventories: Inventories of manufactured durable goods in May, up fifteen consecutive months, increased $0.7 billion or 0.2 percent to $313.2 billion. This was at the highest level since the series began and followed a 0.4 percent April increase. Transportation equipment, up eight of the last nine months, had the largest increase, $0.5 billion or 0.6 percent to $77.5 billion.
