Product design begins and ends with customer and concept should focus on the need of the market, said Dr. K Kumar, Director, Maruti Center for Excellence (MACE) at the seminar on “New Product Development Tools; CAD – CAM – RP – CAE” co-organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and MACE, here on Wednesday. He said that customer perception is changing and product life-cycle has shortened in the competitive global market.
Cost to the customer, style and right time to market a product are the key elements of consideration while designing a product said Dr. Kumar. He said that the designing technology has the challenge to reduce the time taken for a product to reach the market from the concept stage.
Initial quality control in the design stage is very important and first three months are crucial for any original equipment manufacturer, he said. Indian companies should work for the zero tolerance of the customer, added Dr. Kumar.
Mr. Kiran Deshmukh, COO, Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd. said that designing tools have become considerably inexpensive and can address the 'need for speed'. He said that customer satisfaction begins with the right kind of tool to design and shape the right concept.
The validation of virtual prototyping will increase reliability of the final product, said Dr. J S Rao, Chief Science Officer, Altair Engineering. He mentioned that 'Topology Optimisation' has revolutionised the entire design concept of a product. Dr. Rao said that virtual prototype is becoming a reality in modern advanced structures and rotating machines.
