The cast metal prototypes are cost efficient and provides a direct way to get complex metals, said Mr. George Schultheiss, Schultheiss GmBH, Germany. Assembly is not required for the prototypes, which reduce the cost and time of the testing process, he added.

Consumer design process should be viable, desirable and possible, said Mr. Hari Nair, Global Director, Whirpool. He said that scopes of consumer design are user needs, ergonomics, perceived quality and user experience. Visual brand language, form and style are the integral part of designing consumer products, mentioned Mr. Nair.

Mr. Nair said that 'need analysis' through market insight and visual environmental scans should be considered before the product designing. Product designing should focus on removing the perceived value and experienced value for a customer, he added.

It is very important to develop the design culture in India, said Professor L K Das, Head – IDDC, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

He emphasised the need of human resource development and said that Indian industry needs to invest on design manpower as much as it spends on the designing software and packages. India needs to fasten up with the process of developing design characteristics and entrepreneurship, added the professor.

India can be a key contributor to the prototype business with a current growth of 37%, said Mr. N Venkatesh, ANSYS SW Ltd. Companies must have access to the technology and the people who can implement the technology to reach the users, he added. Simultaneous engineering will reduce the time for developing prototype and can enhance the ability to create efficient products, he added.
